Commuters in Boston should plan ahead as the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) prepares to suspend Orange Line service between Back Bay and Forest Hills on Friday, December 5, and Saturday, December 6, 2025. Regular service is expected to resume Sunday, December 7.
The MBTA announced that the shutdown will allow crews to continue critical signal modernization and infrastructure upgrades along the busy corridor. The work is part of an ongoing effort to improve reliability, operational efficiency, and scheduling consistency for riders.
During the two-day suspension, free and accessible shuttle buses will replace train service along the affected stretch, stopping at each Orange Line station between Back Bay and Forest Hills. Riders are also encouraged to take advantage of fare-free Commuter Rail travel between Forest Hills, Ruggles, Back Bay, and South Station. The MBTA estimates that the Commuter Rail trip between Forest Hills and Back Bay takes about 10 minutes—considerably faster than shuttle replacements, which could add at least 30 minutes to regular commutes depending on traffic.
While crews work on signal upgrades, MBTA staff will also use the closure to improve facilities at several stations, including cleaning, plumbing and signage repairs, and window replacements. Preparatory work for column repairs at Massachusetts Avenue Station is also planned.
Transit Ambassadors and MBTA personnel will be on-site to assist riders throughout the service change. Commuters can stay informed through in-station announcements, posted signage, and real-time alerts by subscribing to T-Alerts or following the MBTA on social media.
