Snowfall on New Hampshire's highest peak is approaching levels that could make this November the snowiest on record.
“After more than a foot of new snow since Sunday, Mount Washington Observatory (MWOBS) staff were greeted by incredible views of towering snow drifts,” the observatory posted on Facebook on Wednesday, Nov. 19. “Month-to-date snowfall is now up to 60.4 [inches], bringing us closer to the November record.”
According to a Boston Globe report, the records, kept since 1932, reveal that the snowiest November occurred in 1968. At that time, nearly 87 inches of snow fell on the summit. Observatory staff report that the average November snowfall is 35.6 inches.
Inclement weather has been a concern for many attempting to climb Mount Washington so far this season. The Boston Globe reported that, in October, 20 hikers, many exhibiting signs of hypothermia, were rescued from Mount Washington after getting caught in poor weather.
Visitors to the Cog Railway, which travels to the summit, are being urged to dress warmly and wear sturdy footwear due to persistent cold and snowy conditions.
