The FAA reduced air traffic at 40 airports nationwide, including Boston Logan International Airport, starting last Friday, Nov. 7, which led to weekend flight delays and cancellations.
According to an Associated Press report, the FAA reductions began at 4% and are expected to reach approximately 10% by Nov. 14.
On Thursday, Nov. 6, Massport released a statement warning travelers about possible delays and urging them to check with their airlines due to ongoing impacts at Logan.
The Associated Press reported on Sunday, Nov. 9, that U.S. airline carriers canceled more than 2,700 flights. Here's what travelers at Logan faced during the weekend, according to Boston.com:
- On Friday, Nov. 7, Logan saw 241 delays and 43 cancellations.
- On Saturday, Nov. 8, Logan experienced 239 delays and 47 cancellations.
- On Sunday, Nov. 9, Logan reported 440 delays and 107 cancellations, according to flight tracking service FlightAware.
- As of 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 10, there were 142 delays and 61 cancellations.
Boston.com polled its readers to determine if the flight reductions were impacting their travel. Nearly 200 readers responded, with 45% saying yes, 18% saying no, and 37% saying they didn't know yet. Readers shared stories about cancelled and delayed flights, avoiding Logan, and avoiding air travel altogether.
As a result of the disruptions, airlines announced they are waiving fees and offering refunds to passengers impacted by the travel issues.
