Boston Logan International Airport has launched a new program to reduce passenger stress and create a more welcoming environment for travelers.

The "BOS PAWS" program is a partnership between Massport and the Alliance of Therapy Dogs. The therapy dog team includes dogs such as a giant schnauzer named Remington, a West Highland terrier named Buster, and a French bulldog named Waffles.

“At Boston Logan, we are very focused on creating a seamless and stress-free experience for travelers from the minute they walk into our terminals,” said Massport CEO Rich Davey, in a statement shared with Boston.com. “BOS PAWS will hopefully put smiles on the faces of many travelers and provide comfort to those who may feel anxious or stressed during their journey. Spend a few minutes with Waffles or Buster before your flight. You'll love it.”

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), interacting with animals can boost mood, social support, and overall well-being. Research shows that therapy dogs can lower blood pressure, cortisol levels, and feelings of loneliness, all of which are especially beneficial during travel.

“We want everyone who travels through Logan to know that we prioritize mental health here in Massachusetts,” said Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey in a statement shared with the Franklin Observer and Medway Monitor. “I want to thank Rich Davey and the Massport team, the Alliance of Therapy Dogs, and the handlers who have made this program possible.”

The therapy dog program is part of Logan Airport's broader efforts to enhance the passenger experience. According to Massport, additional traveler amenities have included faster Wi-Fi, renovated bathrooms, and participation in the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program.

Logan Airport recently ranked No. 10 in the 20th annual J.D. Power North America Airport Satisfaction Study and aims to become a top-five mega airport within the next three years, according to Davey.
