On Tuesday, Oct. 7, Worcester County Commissioners unanimously approved new waste management regulations designed to prohibit the acceptance of out-of-county waste. The move aims to protect local resources and ensure compliance with county laws.

The new rules specifically require commercial waste haulers to avoid crossing county lines when transporting waste. County officials said they would send letters to all waste carriers, along with public notices and social media updates, to inform them of the impending changes to the county's waste handling regulations.

Violations of these regulations would lead to fines. If they received fines, haulers would have the option to either pay them or request a hearing in a process similar to that for other county citations.

Commissioner Eric Fiori (District 3) highlighted the importance of clear communication and proper documentation, such as standardized inspection procedures, to defend the county in potential legal cases.

"If they cross over from Wicomico, or Virginia, or Sussex, they're automatically gonna be in violation," he stated.
