The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is considering the former Fisher College property in North Attleborough as a potential new site for its full-service Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV).

Town Manager Michael Borg announced that the town conducted a walkthrough of the site with RMV, the Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance, and MassDOT representatives. The town purchased the site from Fisher College in 2023.

“If we're able to land that, it would bring the registry that was once in North Attleborough years ago back to the town,” said Borg in a statement shared with the North Star Reporter.

According to the town's request for proposal, a 10-year proposed lease starting at $107,500 annually would increase to $140,263.

Borg noted that officials are looking for a bigger space than the current RMV, located in the basement of 75 Park St. in Attleboro. While the Attleboro RMV currently offers express service, the new location would be upgraded to full service.

Fifty on-site parking spots are required; the new RMV location would serve 200 to 250 people per day. According to the town's proposal, the location would offer road and license tests, as well as maintain records for individual identification, driving records, and vehicles.

Parking for the new RMV would include on-site and satellite lots to accommodate the expected daily traffic.

The former Fisher College property at 451 Elm St. is also designated to host the town's senior center, regional food pantry, Veterans' Services, and Health departments.

Taylor O'Neil, the communications and information officer for North Attleborough, told the North Star Reporter that town officials anticipate a decision within four to six weeks.

“If the RMV chooses 451 Elm St. as its new location, it would significantly benefit the town by offering residents a convenient site for a range of RMV services. Additionally, this move would generate revenue for the town, enabling us to make further building improvements, such as repaving the parking lot,” said Assistant Town Manager Antonio Morabito in a statement shared with the North Star Reporter.
