With October's arrival last week, Salem's Haunted Happenings is expected to bring record visitors to town during weekends this month. 

Salem's Police Chief Lucas Miller reported to News 5 WCVB Boston that approximately 75,000 people were estimated to visit Salem on the first Saturday of the month. Those numbers are only expected to climb as Oct. 31 approaches.

Here's what to know if you're planning to venture out for some tricks and treats in Salem:

Parking and Shuttle Information

Three satellite parking lots will offer more than 1,300 free parking spaces:

  1. Salem State University's O'Keefe Center at 225 Canal St.
  2. Salem High School at 77 Willson St.
  3. Behind Salem Hospital at 108 Jefferson Ave. (no parking on Oct. 31)

The city offers two shuttle routes connecting downtown Salem with the three satellite parking lots. Shuttles will run every Saturday and Sunday in October, including Oct. 13 and Oct. 31. In most cases, shuttles will operate from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

  • Route A: Salem High School ⇆ 108 Jefferson Ave. ⇆ Riley Plaza
  • Route B: SSU O'Keefe Center ⇆ 108 Jefferson Ave. ⇆ Riley Plaza
  • Meeting place for both routes: 108 Jefferson Ave.

Public Transportation

  • MBTA Commuter Rail: Visitors can reach Salem Depot from Boston's North Station on both the Newburyport and Rockport lines.
  • Salem Ferry: Riders can sail from Boston's Long Wharf to 10 Blaney St. in less than an hour.
  • Salem Skipper: This ridesharing service is available within the city.

Restrooms

Bathrooms at the Salem Armory Regional Visitor Center, operated by the National Park Service, are closed due to the federal government shutdown. Available public restrooms include the following:

  • Artists Row: 24 New Derby St.
  • Front Street Lot Porto Potties: 6 Lafayette St.
  • Hawthorne Boulevard Porto Potties: 28 Hawthorne Blvd.
  • Salem Common Porto Potties: 25 Washington Square
  • Salem Green Porto Potties: 1 Salem Green
  • Salem High School Porto Potties: 77 Willson St.
  • Salem Maritime National Historic Park/Central Wharf: 193 R Derby St.
  • Sewall Street Porto Potties: 1 Sewall St.
  • South Harbor Garage: 10 Congress St.
