MassDOT and the MBTA have begun a Water Transportation Study to explore new regional ferry services along the Massachusetts coast. Public engagement sessions on the topic have already started this month.

“Ferries are more than an alternative to driving. They are a vital connection that strengthens ties between communities, reduces congestion, and supports sustainable travel,” said MassDOT Secretary and CEO Monica Tibbits-Nutt in a statement shared with Mass Transit magazine. “This study will be shaped by community voices, and we encourage residents, local leaders, and stakeholders to share their ideas as we work together to shape the future of water transportation in Massachusetts.”

Public engagement activities will involve virtual and in-person meetings, workshops, pop-up events, stakeholder discussions, and an online platform for feedback.

According to Mass Transit's report, the study seeks to evaluate improvements to existing ferry routes and infrastructure, identify new ferry terminal locations and routes, and upgrade “multimodal access”  at current and potential future ferry terminals.

Through its study, MassDOT and the MBTA intend to review past and current ferry services to address immediate and future transportation needs. The study's findings are expected to guide future regional water transit development.

More information about the public engagement sessions is available on MassDOT's website.
