If you're looking to impress your Instagram followers, these coffee capitals might do the trick! Who doesn't love a cup of Joe?
Coffee content can be big on social media. Why not? Who doesn't love coffee? It's arguably the best part of waking up, regardless of which brand you like in your cup. So, coffee content can often be relatable and consumed by the masses. A good looking roast, a nice setting, a scenic view from your favorite coffee spot--all of these can make for good content on your Instagram and social media. However, some cities are better than others and have more to offer when it comes to coffee and coffee content. These cities are often considered "coffee capitals" because of how popular they are for the beans and coffeeshops. Heepsy recently sought to find out which cities are the biggest and best coffee capitals in the world and their list might surprise you!
What Cities Are Coffee Capitals For Your Instagram?
Personally, I would expect a city in Italy to come in at number one on the list. When I think of coffee capitals for my Instagram, I picture an Italian coffeeshop with an outdoor patio with people enjoying the finest of espressos. What do you picture? Do you have any expectations heading into this before we get to the results?
To find its answers, Heepsy analyzed coffee affordability, cafe density, and Instagram engagement across 70 global cities to determine which cities offer the best coffee experience and thus are the best coffee capitals for Instagram and social media. Their metrics included total cafe counts along with Instagram hashtag volumes for location-specific coffee content. Heepsy then ranked these cities prioritizing affordability (40%), social media engagement (30%), and cafe accessibility (30%) to get their results.
In the end, London was named the biggest coffee capital, earning a perfect 100/100 coffee culture score. Heepsy points out how many cafes they have to choose from in London (3,544) and their strong social media engagement that helped them earn the top spot on the list.
Melbourne took second place and it led globally in Instagram engagement, per Heepsy. This came as a surprise. Again, I would have expected a city in Italy to get the most Instagram engagement for coffee content. Even within Australia, I would have expected Sydney to be better due to its views you can have while sipping your coffee. Including looking out at the bay, the water, or the famous opera house.
In third, we have San Paulo, Brazil. The coffee there is priced at just $1.40 making it one of the most affordable, per Heepsy. It also has a lot of cafes and options to choose from. I could see the coffee being quality and the scene as well. I've heard good things about Colombian coffee and it's close to Brazil. This makes sense to me.
After that, we finally have an Italian city with Rome coming in at 4th. It offers the lowest priced espresso among the ranked cities, per Heepsy. Istanbul, Turkey; Sydney, Australia; Budapest, Hungary; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Florence, Italy; and Milan, Italy finish the Top 10 on Heepsy's list. So, I was wrong about Italian cities being at the top of the list but they did have a lot of cities that ended up making the list compared to other countries, so I'll consider it a win.
Why Is Coffee Content So Big?
So, why coffee content? What makes it so popular? Is it really different from city to city. That's a definite: Yes! Tabi Vicuna, founder at Heepsy says, "Coffee has become part of how people map and document their travel. Travelers increasingly plan visits not only around well-known attractions but also around those cafes that appear frequently on Instagram. The local cafes have also embraced that behavior, whether intentionally or not. Overall, cafe atmosphere has become part of the tourism economy in a way we couldn't have imaged a decade ago." Get out and see the world and enjoy some coffee!
