Why are farmers in India wearing bear costumes? To protect their crops and products of course!

Here in America, you're probably familiar with scarecrows in fields. They have a purpose, to scare away the crows as the name implies. Well, over in India they're trying to scare off another animal--monkeys! However, scarecrows don't seem like they work to scare of the monkeys so instead farmers in India are wearing bear costumes to scare away the monkeys. It might sound odd, but when it's your livelihood you'll do anything to protect it. Strangely, it might actually work!

Farmers In India Wearing Bear Costumes To Scare Away Monkeys

According to The New York Post, villagers in Uttar Pradesh pooled money together to purchase a bear costume which the farmers take turns wearing in an effort to scare away monkeys and protect their crops. Video circulating online shows a farmer in India (Dhaurahra of Lakhimpur Kheri district in Northern India) shows a farmer dressed in the bear costume to protect their mustard, chickpea, wheat, and sugarcane crops. Now, it's not the most realistic bear costume, I will admit that. However, it might be good enough! I don't think this would fool a human but it might be able to trick a monkey.

Farmers in the area say the monkeys have become a serious issue and have been repeatedly destroying crops. Farmers have complained but the village head and officers and officials are yet to address the problem. That's why the farmers in India have opted to take it upon themselves to protect their crops. You have to hand it to them it's a very creative decision. You might have to do a little more work but it seems like it could be worth it. Hopefully everyone is sharing the bear costume and taking turns like they're supposed to.

The New York Post says Dudhwa Field Director Lalit Verma says that the farmers are now being educated during meetings and advised on methods to protect and guard their crops from these monkeys. You can see more on farmers who have been doing this in the YouTube video below. They might want to save up and get a bear costume that looks more like a bear but in the meantime this should work and appears to be working just find for them. Hopefully this doesn't become a thing here in the United States, I think scarecrows are scary enough. I can't imagine seeing a person in a bear costume roaming through the fields. That would be a strange sight!

Cort Freeman was born and raised in Metro Detroit. He was named Clarkston High School 2009 Class Clown 13 years after graduating. Totally normal thing to happen. That’s thanks to his time spent as an Intern at Comedy Central and Social Media Correspondent for The Colbert Report. Cort has done comedy across the country, both standing up and sitting down. When he’s not trying to make you laugh on-air and online, he’s probably at home enjoying his favorite shows like Seinfeld, South Park, and The Office. He’s also totally uncomfortable writing about himself in the third person. Cort enjoys writing about comedy, food, sports, and entertainment. So, basically anything and everything.
