Whether you’re a parent, a casual viewer, or “asked” by your older sibling to babysit your nieces and nephews, these Golden Globes-nominated animated films can keep you and the raucous little ones preoccupied for a couple of hours. Note that not all of these films are appropriate for children.
Golden Globes Animated Movie Nominees
Flow
Already winning film and animation awards, Flow is a Latvian animated fantasy adventure that follows a black cat. After a devastating flood destroys its home, the cat, who is accustomed to being alone, seeks refuge on a sailboat with a variety of different species. Together, they must learn to cooperate despite their differences in order to survive. The movie doesn’t contain any dialogue but per IndieWire, it is “One of the most groundbreaking animated films about nature since Bambi.”
Kids will love this movie because of the featured animals. However, smaller kids might get bored since there is no dialogue.
Inside Out 2
An animated film made for kids (but it’s really for adults!), Inside Out 2, like its predecessor, will make you feel all the feels, especially with the addition of new emotions we adults all know too well, like Anxiety, Embarrassment, Boredom and Envy. The movie follows Riley as she deals with her “sense of self” and Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger, and Disgust must learn to work with Riley’s other emotions brought about by puberty.
It’s worth your time just for Joy’s line: “Maybe this is what happens when you grow up. You feel less joy,” validating all our adult feelings of insecurity, worry, inadequacy, and self-doubt. Even if the premise of the movie seems to be targeting adults, children will still enjoy Inside Out 2 because of the colorful animated characters.
Memoir of a Snail
A bit different from the other nominated films, Memoir of a Snail is a stop-motion animation loosely based on the life of writer, producer, and director Adam Elliot. The film follows the bittersweet journey of Grace Pudel, from childhood to adulthood. After the death of their father, Grace was separated from her twin, and the two were placed in separate foster homes.
Even though this is an animated film, it certainly is for adults and might be a bit too heavy for kids.
Moana 2
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Auliʻi Cravalho are back for Moana 2, a continuation of Moana’s story and a reunion with Maui to find the lost island of Motufetu. The original gang of ragtag animal sidekicks are back, plus Moana’s younger sister, ghost Grandma, and tranquilizer-wielding coconuts.
This is a movie for the whole family especially families who are fonds of musicals and are loyal Disney fans.
Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl
Per Netflix, “Top dog Gromit springs into action to save his master when Wallace’s high-tech invention goes rogue, and he’s framed for a series of suspicious crimes.” Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl is a sequel to the 1993 film, The Wrong Trousers. It received positive reviews from critics and as of this writing has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
This British animated comedy franchise is well-loved by adults. Children might still enjoy it because of the dog Gromit.
The Wild Robot
Featuring an ensemble of voice actors including the “internet’s daddy” Pedro Pascal, Lupita Nyong’o, Kit Connor, Bill Nighy, Stephanie Hsu, Mark Hamill, Catherine O’Hara, Ving Rhames, and Matt Berry, the animated movie is based on the 2016 novel of the same name. The movie is about Roz, a service robot who became the adoptive mother of an orphaned goose, Brightbill. The movie is critically and commercially successful, with critics praising it for its emotional depth, animation, and visuals.
Similar to Moana, Wild Robot is also for the whole family because who doesn’t love robots?
