Was A Thai Dish So Spicy It Gave A California Doctor A Chemical Burn?
Was a Thai dish so spicy it gave a California doctor a chemical burn? That’s what she’s alleging!
Can you imagine having that happen? I’ve had some pretty hot dishes from Thai restaurants but never anything that could leave damage like that! Even someone who loves spicy food probably wouldn’t want it to be that spicy. Now, she’s taking the matter to court and trying to hold a restaurant employee responsible.
California Doctor Reportedly Gets A Chemical Burn From Thai Food
Thai food is famous for its flavors and its heat. If you order the right (or wrong) dish then you might get something explosive. However, usually that heat is expected and manageable. This time, it does not sound like it was in this case.
According to The New York Post, a California doctor alleges a Thai dish was so spicy she suffered chemical burns on her throat and is now taking the case to a jury trial. It sounds like new details have come out that could land an employee at the restaurant in some hot water, themselves. It reportedly happened with a spicy appetizer known as Dragon Balls that were served at Coup de Thai in Los Gatos, California. Now, neurologist Harjasleen Walia is suffering from permanent bodily injuries, per The New York Post.
She’s claiming that the Dragon Balls, a chicken based dish, scalded her vocal cords and esophagus that were unfit for human consumption. Now, she seems to be pointing the finger at one employee in particular who may have added too many peppers to the balls of meat. She claims in a court filing, “A new employee who prepared the dish made an error and added additional peppers, rather than reducing them as requested.” A jury trial has been set in August of next year. It sounds like she tried all the tricks to cool down the heat like finding a milk-based drink but it didn’t work or help.
I’m unfamiliar with the dish, but it sounds like it’s made from bird’s eye chili peppers, green onion, and cilantro. She knew to request for it to be mild but it sounds like that’s not what she ended up receiving. The lawsuit states, “Harjasleen Walia was poisoned, made ill and burned necessitating medical care. She incurred permanent injuries and will forever be damaged to her body. These consequences are the direct result of defendants serving to her foods unfit for human consumption.” She’s now seeking compensation for medical expenses along with lost income and damages totaling more than $35,000, per The New York Post.
