Was A Man Born With 3 Penises?
Was a man born with 3 penises? That’s what it sounds like and it’s only the 2nd ever documented case of the rare birth defect.
Some might consider being born with 3 penises a blessing while others consider it a curse. It all depends on your perspective. It sounds like it was discovered by researchers at the University of Birmingham Medical School in the United Kingdom while dissecting a donated body of a 78-year-old man–who they believe could have gone his entire life without being aware of his condition, per News.com.au.
There Was A Man Born With 3 Penises
Duplicate penises, also known as diphallia, is a very rare anomaly believed to affect one in every 5 to 6 million people. It’s so rare there have only been 100 cases reported in medical literature. According to News.com.au authors wrote in the Journal of Medical Case Reports saying, “Triphallia, a rare congenital anomaly describing the presence of 3 distinct penile shafts, has been reported only once in literature.” The authors continued, “These penile morphological abnormalities may not have been identified during his life. However, he may have lived with functional deficits due to the abnormal anatomy of the region, which may include urinary tract infections, erectile dysfunction or fertility issues.”
It sounds like the subject had a normal exterior but 2 small supernumerary penises were concealed within the scrotal sac, per News.com.au. The primary penis reportedly shared a urethra with the secondary penis. News.com.au reports, “Genetic abnormalities affecting the expression of androgen receptors may cause morphological genital abnormalities. In this case, there may have been triplication of the genital tubercle. The urethra originally developed in the secondary penis, however, when this penis failed to develop, the urethra diverted its course and developed in the primary penis instead. The tertiary penis is a remnant of the triplicated genital tubercle.” That’s a lot of medical jargon and it’s hard to understand, but if you’re into science you are probably following along.
This discovery has medical professionals thinking the condition might be more common than previously believed and it may just be underreported or never detected. That would be wild to find out that you’ve had 3 penises all your life and never knew about it. It can also be tied with sexual dysfunction, obstructive urinary symptoms, and urinary incontinence in adulthood, per News.com.au. Pretty crazy discovery and these students were probably mind blown over it.
