Widow Claims Florida Surgeon Removed Wrong Organ During Surgery Killing Her Husband
Did a Florida surgeon remove the wrong organ during surgery leading to his patient’s death? That’s what his widow is claiming!
We’ve talked about several surgeries-gone-wrong on Dave & Chuck The Freak. Some of them have left people missing appendages when they came to, mixed up appointments, some were about things found in patients, and now it’s a surgery where the wrong organ was reportedly removed! You don’t want to have that mistake happen to you.
Did A Florida Surgeon Remove The Wrong Organ During Surgery?
Personally, I don’t think I could tell the difference between the liver and the spleen. I know the general area where they can be found but am not very familiar with their general shape or look so I would have a hard time telling them apart. However, you’d expect a doctor or a surgeon to be able to tell the difference. It’s pretty important! Unfortunately, it sounds like this Florida surgeon mistakenly removed the patient’s liver instead of his spleen–leading to some significant problems.
According to NBC News, 70-year-old William Bryan, of Alabama, underwent surgery at Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast hospital in Miramar, Florida due to issues with his spleen. It sounds like William and his wife, Barbara, were visiting their rental property in Florida when he began experiencing pain in his side. According to NBC News, Barbara’s lawyer, Joe Zarzaur, said, “Dr. Shaknovsky removed Mr. Bryan’s liver and, in so doing, transected the major vasculature supplying the liver, causing immediate and catastrophic blood loss resulting in death. The surgeon proceeded with labeling the removed liver specimen as a ‘spleen,’ and it wasn’t until following the death that it was identified that the organ removed was actually Mr. Bryan’s liver, as opposed to the spleen.”
NBC News reports that Dr. Shaknovsky claimed the spleen was so diseased it was 4-times its normal size and had moved to the other side of his body. However, it’s pointed out that a liver is significantly larger than a spleen where a spleen is usually the size of an avocado and a liver is usually the size of a football, per NBC News. One would think they’d be easy to tell apart if you’re a professional. Again, I am not. The hospital is now investigating the incident and says patient safety remains their number one priority. In a statement obtained by NBC News, the hospital says, “Patient safety is and remains our number one priority. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the family. We hold the privacy of our patients in the highest regard. We do not comment on specific patient cases or active litigation.” Probably smart. The family needs, and might get, much more than the hospital’s thoughts and prayers!
