An Underrated New England Mountain Town You Need To Know About
Just about three hours outside of Boston you will find yourself immediately start to decompress upon hitting the winding roads. That’s because this New England mountain town is full of serene spots that seem to delightfully quiet in the summer months.
When heading up to Vermont, where you are bound to find plenty of weekend travelers who are looking to hit the many ski slopes. As the snowy months wrap up and those rental condo prices drop, many of these quaint towns remain open and fully functional. In fact, I have met numerous local folks who actually prefer the warmer weather month in this area of Vermont.
The mountains are still accessible for hiking. In addition, river swimming is one of the most refreshing swims you will ever take. This spot in Vermont has all of that. Plus, rope swings, a gem of a hotel, and a delicious pizza restaurant.
Woodstock Vermont Is The Ideal New England Mountain Town To Explore In The Summer
It may not be the first place in the country when you hear the name “Woodstock,” but this central spot of the Green Mountain state is hard to leave in the summer.
You drive through the charming streets of downtown, which appear old-fashioned but are lined with modern retail shops, coffee corners, and even butcheries. Head around a rotary, and you will soon have your choice of great locations to enjoy a dip in the river. There are spots that are visible and accessible from the road, and then there are spots that only the locals know. The latter seems to be the best of the bunch, although you can’t go wrong.
506 On The River is a hotel in town that is one of my favorite hotels in the country. It consistently quiet. Each room has a patio that overlooks the green grass. When you walk out the back you will find fire pits to enjoy, a ton of games like Frisbee and Wiffle Ball for the kids, and a path that will bring you right to the river.
The one restaurant on the first floor is a farm-to-table style that offers an tasty breakfast buffet and full menu for lunch or dinner. The rustic bar also has full shelves of cocktails ready to pour.
There’s also a luxurious Woodstock Inn and Resort that is more downtown. It has the look of a giant mansion and offers many of the amenities above, just steps outside your door.
Additional activities include the infamous red Taftsville Bridge, which is also on the river. Upon driving over, you will eventually find a few rope swings where you can carefully plunge into the river.
Lastly, Ramunto’s Brick Oven Pizza is just on another level (and this is coming from a native New Yorker who is a pizza enthusiast). Their square pie, traditional, or garlic knot crust pizza is so well-made you may not need another dinner spot in town for your stay.
