Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel: The Exhibition is bringing the beauty of the Vatican to the Boston area for a limited engagement.

You don't have to be an art school scholar to know the history of the Sistine Chapel. Michelangelo’s historic artwork has adorned the 60 foot high ceiling and 40 feet of the West wall of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican since it was commissioned by Pope Julius II in 1508. It took seven years for the artist to complete the frescoes, which have gone on to become iconic, world-famous works of art.

So how exactly have they brought it here? From the press release: "The frescoes are reproduced in a unique way using licensed high definition photos and are brought to life using a special printing technique and materials that emulate the look and feel of the original frescoes. Reproduced life sized and placed on or near eye-level, this exhibit provides guests’ unparalleled access."

The press release continues: "Audiences will be able to get close enough to spot the individual brush strokes from Michelangelo’s own hand as a free audio guide app provides background on each work." I don't know about you, but travelling to the Vatican to see the Sistine Chapel is a bit cost-prohibitive for me. But taking a trip to Chelsea to marvel at the art? That's a deal I can swing.

And you can, too. The exhibition runs Thursday through Sunday from 11 a.m. through 6 p.m. at 121 Webster Ave. in Chelsea. Tickets start at $20 for adults and $13.50 for children ages 4-17 for the 60-90 minute program. In other words, affordable. And unique. To purchase tickets, find out more about the exhibition, and get an idea of what you'll see, visit them here. Art history in the Boston area. Take full advantage if you're able.
