Pizza toppings are serious business in my house. Perhaps that's why I'm so triggered looking at Redbook's new study proclaiming "The Most Popular Pizza Toppings In Every State." Depending on my mood and the company surrounding me I may choose plain cheese (crowd-pleaser, not going to alienate anybody, classic) or pepperoni (usually one pepperoni to every one or two plains - same reasons). If we have veg-heads over I'm always down with a veggie pie. My wife loves a good buffalo chicken pizza. Variety is the essence of life or something like that, no?
I scrolled to Massachusetts's favorite pizza topping... and... huh? It's not that I think this topping flat-out sucks or anything. And I know people enjoy this topping - I've just never been with anyone who orders it! Again - I'm not saying that people don't order it, I know they do, I just have serious reservations with calling it Massachusetts's FAVORITE pizza topping.
That topping is? Bacon. Bacon is Massachusetts's favorite pizza topping?? I won't knock it 'til I try it - then I'll knock it as being a greasy salt-lick and an overall pizza-ruiner, but I didn't say that yet.
Do you love bacon pizza?? Feel free to set me straight in the comments. Now please stay for additional pizza content that you'll love as much as bacon on pizza (gag!):
When I feel like the world has turned it's back on me, you know who's always there for me? Pizza. And almost every day there's a new survey or study or blog naming THE best pizza in Massachusetts. I guess this is another one of those... kind of. Also, the winner of this Massachusetts Pizza Off was neither A) Pizzeria Regina nor B) Santarpio's.
FamilyMinded just released it's best pizzas in every state - with a twist - they focused on "Best FAMILY Pizza Joint," that is, they're all "the best" pizzeria in the state to go out and dine-in with your family. I like that twist, good job FamilyMinded!
So I'll give you their picks for Best Family Pizza Joint in every New England state, I'll throw in a few extra states for fun, then we'll wrap it up with Massachusetts. If it's not Regina or Santarpio's, who do you think it could be? I'll also include Dave Portnoy reviews when there's one available.
ALSO - If you love BURRITOS, this one is the best in Massachusetts. Ok, on to the 'za!

Boston is very well known for its pizza. I'd put Boston up against any major city in the country in regards to pizza. When I think of pizza cities, I think of amount of pizza places, best bang for your buck, the type of pizza available and obviously the best tasting pizza.
The website www.anytimeestimate.com has put together a list of the Best Pizza Cities in America.
Now what do they base it on? According to the site, "we analyzed publicly available U.S. business data, Census data, economic and labor statistics, and Google Trends data, as well as findings from Thrillist, Pizza Today, Expensivity, and Menu With Price."
They come up with this list every year so this data is new for 2022. This is how the criteria is weighed:
You may be surprised as to where Boston falls on this list. Or then again maybe you won't. They made the top five which I believe is a great score. Although according to Anytime Estimate, they gave extra points to cities with large amounts of independent pizza places which Boston definitely has.
They also gave penalties to cities that have large amounts of pizza chains. Believe it or not, New York City did NOT make the top 15, purely because of its low share of independent pizzerias. Detroit ranks first for "pizza passion" and has the most independent pizza places per capita.
Let's take a look at the rest of the top pizza cities in America.
