Beyoncé: How She Paid Tribute To Tina Turner Over The Years

Author Autumn Hawkins
May 25th 2:47 PM
LOS ANGELES, CA - FEBRUARY 10: Singers Beyonce Knowles (L) and Tina Turner perform onstage during the 50th annual Grammy awards held at the Staples Center on February 10, 2008 in Los Angeles, California.

Throughout Beyoncé’s career, the multi-hyphenate entertainer has shown Tina Turner a lot of love and respect. So following the news of Turner’s passing on Wednesday (May 24), the Renaissance creator took to her website to pen a tribute to the “What’s Love Got to Do with It” singer.

“My beloved queen, I love you endlessly,” Beyoncé’s message began. “I’m so grateful for your inspiration, and all the ways you have paved the way.”

“You are strength and resilience,” she continued. “You are the epitome of power and passion. We are all so fortunate to have witnessed your kindness and beautiful spirit that will forever remain. Thank you for all you have done.”

The two performed together at the 2008 Grammy Awards where Turner performed her ’80s classic “What’s Love Got To Do With It.” Beyoncé later joined the icon on stage where they both performed “Proud Mary.”

In a resurfaced clip from one of many of the Beyhive’s fan accounts, Beyoncé is seen rehearsing with Turner before they took the Grammy stage. The “CUFF IT” singer said how she admired Turner since a young girl.

“When I was a kid and I saw her tapes, I wanted to be like her,” Beyoncé is heard saying in the clip. “This is literally a dream to me because she’s the ultimate. To actually be on the stage with her is crazy.”

Prior to Beyoncé’s 2008 performance with Turner, the Lemonade creator was tapped to perform a tribute for Turner as she was being awarded the Kennedy Center Honor by President George W. Bush in 2005.

“I’ll never forget the first time I saw you perform,” Beyoncé said to Turner, per Rolling Stone. “I never in my life saw a woman so powerful, so fearless, so fabulous — and those legs!”

Beyonce’s mother, (who is also named Tina), Tina Knowles posted a throwback of her daughter and Turner rehearsing for the Grammys performance.

“I remember this day like it was yesterday,” Knowles began her message on Instagram. “It was the day that Beyoncé was to rehearse with Tina Turner for the Grammys. We were both so excited and when she arrived and we were told that she was in the other room we all witnessed Beyoncé, turning into a five-year-old actually skipping across the floor to embrace her. (I was the biggest fan and had my own story of when I met Tina in 1980.)”

“Beyonce always talked about the two Tinas that she loved and admired. She had done a tribute to her years before at the Kennedy Honors and we had a chance to meet her there She was lovely. She was bigger than life, but this was different. She actually got to perform side-by-side with Tina Turner!,” Knowles excitedly explained. “They had so much laughter those days and it is one of Beyonce’s best memories. The world is a less better place without this legendary, gorgeous resilient woman. When I need to get my super strength together and know that I can overcome anything I think of Tina Turner who started over in her mid 40’s and became the biggest superstar. It always gives me hope that it’s not about the age it’s about the person.”

“Today I celebrate this amazing, beautiful, resilient queen she will be sadly missed. She was ‘Simply The Best’,” she concluded.

The legendary singer died at her home near Zurich in Switzerland after a long illness, her team announced on Wednesday. She was 83.

“Before she was the Queen of Rock and Roll, Tina Turner was a farmer’s daughter in Tennessee. As a child, she sang in the church choir before becoming one of the most successful recording artists of all time.

In addition to being a once-in-a-generation talent that changed American music forever, Tina’s personal strength was remarkable. Overcoming adversity, and even abuse, she built a career for the ages and a life and legacy that were entirely hers.

Jill and I send our love and prayers to her husband Erwin, the rest of the Turner family, and fans around the world who are mourning today for the woman they agree was ‘simply the best.'”

“Tina Turner was iconic, talented, and fierce. What a journey. What a life, filled with great highs and great lows. She left an abusive marriage. She found love again. She made her way in this world, selling millions of albums. She became a mother, she experienced terrible sadness, and she still kept going. She brought joy to so many, even when she was experiencing such tragedy. I’ve always admired her. I first met her as a teenager and followed her throughout her inspiring life. May we honor Tina, and may we continue to play her music loudly and dance!”
