CIREBON, INDONESIA – MARCH 20: A worker wearing glasses to protect against cobra venom, handles a live cobra brought in by a snake hunter at a workshop for skinning snakes on March 20, 2014 outside Cirebon, Indonesia. Small workshops scattered around West and Central Java, Indonesia process hundreds of snakes per day for the garment industry, which are then made into handbags shoes and other fashion accessories. Although the workshops exist primarily to process the skins, nothing goes to waste and the meat and other parts of the snake are exported for use in traditional medicines.(Photo by Ed Wray/Getty Images)

The venomous seven-foot snake -- which is native to Africa, not North Carolina -- was last spotted at about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday in a residential area, police say. Making the situation even more urgent is the fact that Zebra cobras are classified as "spitting" snakes -- meaning they spit venom into the eyes of their prey, shutting down their victims' nervous systems, according to the African Snakebite Institute.
About 12 hours after the snake was last spotted, police conducted a search of a home owned by Keith and Rebecca Gilford, law enforcement documents reveal. Although investigators have not yet released information about the warrant, local media outlets are reporting the couple's son, Christopher, has shown off his extensive collection of pet snakes on Facebook.
